Solar Filters

Solar filters allow you to observe the Sun safely by dramatically reducing its brightness before sunlight enters your telescope.

Never look at the Sun through a telescope, binoculars or finder scope without a correctly fitted, certified solar filter. Doing so can cause permanent eye damage or blindness within seconds.

What Can You See?

With a quality white-light solar filter you may observe:

  • Sunspots

  • Solar granulation

  • Sunspot groups

  • Planetary transits (when they occur)

Types of Solar Filters

White-Light Filters

Ideal for observing sunspots and the visible solar surface.

Hydrogen-Alpha Systems

Reveal spectacular solar prominences, filaments and active regions.

Safety First

Always inspect your filter before every observing session and never use one that is damaged, scratched or incorrectly fitted.

Our Advice

Solar observing is a fascinating branch of astronomy, but safety must always come first. Always use equipment specifically designed for observing the Sun.
