What Can You See With a Telescope?

One of the first questions people ask before buying a telescope is, "What will I actually be able to see?" The answer depends on your telescope, observing conditions and the brightness of the object you're viewing. While you won't usually see the colourful images produced by space telescopes, you can still enjoy breathtaking views of the night sky.

The Moon

The Moon is one of the most rewarding objects to observe. Even a small telescope can reveal:

  • Mountains and valleys

  • Thousands of impact craters

  • Dark lava plains (known as maria)

  • Changing shadows along the lunar terminator

Planets

Several planets show impressive detail through a telescope.

Jupiter

  • Cloud bands across the planet

  • The four Galilean moons

  • The Great Red Spot under favourable conditions

Saturn

  • Its famous ring system

  • Several moons

  • Subtle cloud bands

Mars

During favourable oppositions you may see:

  • Polar ice caps

  • Dark surface features

  • Dust storms

Venus

  • Crescent and gibbous phases similar to the Moon

Deep-Sky Objects

Under dark skies, telescopes reveal thousands of fascinating objects including:

  • Galaxies

  • Nebulae

  • Globular clusters

  • Open star clusters

  • Double stars

The larger your telescope's aperture, the more light it gathers and the more detail you'll be able to observe.

Can You See Colour?

Most deep-sky objects appear in shades of grey to the human eye. This is completely normal. Long-exposure photographs collect light over many seconds or minutes, revealing colours that our eyes cannot detect during visual observing.

Getting the Best Views

Your observing experience depends on more than the telescope itself. Dark skies, steady atmospheric conditions and allowing your telescope to cool to the outdoor temperature all help produce sharper, more detailed views.

Our Advice

Every telescope offers a window into the universe. Whether you're exploring the Moon's rugged landscape, watching Jupiter's moons dance around the planet or discovering distant galaxies, astronomy is one of the few hobbies where every clear night brings something new to explore.
