40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR Sensor

The X-T5 features Fujifilm’s high-resolution, back-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor. Its 40.2MP resolution captures fine detail across star fields, lunar landscapes and foreground subjects while providing plenty of flexibility for cropping.

The APS-C sensor also applies a 1.5x crop factor to compatible lenses. This can be useful when photographing the Moon or other distant subjects, although photographers seeking expansive Milky Way compositions should select an appropriately wide-angle lens.

X-Processor 5

Fujifilm’s X-Processor 5 delivers fast image processing, improved power efficiency and responsive camera operation. It also supports advanced subject-detection autofocus, HEIF image capture and the camera’s high-resolution video modes.

Five-Axis In-Body Image Stabilisation

The X-T5 incorporates five-axis in-body image stabilisation offering up to seven stops of compensation under supported conditions. This can be extremely useful for handheld low-light photography.

For long exposures of the night sky, however, the camera should normally be secured to a sturdy tripod or equatorial tracking mount. Image stabilisation should usually be switched off when the camera is firmly mounted.

Three-Way Tilting Touchscreen

The three-way tilting touchscreen is particularly useful when the camera is positioned low to the ground, pointed towards the sky or mounted in portrait orientation.

Magnified live view makes it easier to focus manually on a bright star, the Moon or another distant target. Manual focusing will generally provide more dependable results than autofocus when photographing stars.

Traditional Exposure Controls

Dedicated dials for ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation provide direct access to essential settings. When paired with a Fujifilm lens featuring an aperture ring, the X-T5 offers an intuitive, hands-on approach to exposure control.

Because the subject must remain completely stationary throughout the sequence, this mode is generally unsuitable for untracked stars. It may, however, prove useful for detailed terrestrial foregrounds or carefully controlled, accurately tracked setups.

Electronic Shutter up to 1/180,000 Second

The electronic shutter provides speeds of up to 1/180,000 second, allowing fast-aperture lenses to be used in extremely bright conditions.

While this is not required for conventional long-exposure astrophotography, it expands the camera’s versatility for daytime landscape, wildlife and travel photography.

Film Simulation Modes

Fujifilm’s Film Simulation modes offer a selection of distinctive colour and monochrome styles inspired by the company’s photographic film heritage.

These modes can be useful for producing attractive JPEG images in-camera. Astrophotographers who want maximum control over noise reduction, white balance and colour during editing should also record RAW files.

Dual UHS-II SD Card Slots

Two UHS-II SD card slots provide flexible storage and backup options. Images can be recorded sequentially, duplicated across both cards or separated by file format.

This is useful during long imaging sessions, particularly when capturing large RAW sequences for stacking or time-lapse production.

Video Capabilities

Internal 6.2K Recording

The X-T5 can record detailed 6.2K video at up to 30p with 10-bit 4:2:2 colour internally. It also offers oversampled 4K recording and high-frame-rate Full HD options.

Built-in interval shooting makes it possible to capture repeated exposures for star trails, time-lapse sequences and image stacking.

Long-Exposure Noise Reduction

Long-exposure noise reduction can help minimise hot pixels and fixed-pattern noise. However, it requires the camera to make a second dark exposure of approximately equal length.
